Rising above the firestorm

I thought of “Rise Above” after reading a spate of articles about what lies ahead for the so-called Manosphere. Lately, there’s been some infighting and handwringing, especially over Mark Minter. I don’t know much about it, but, to borrow the Game of Thrones vernacular, banners have been called. It’s a sign of change, and with every transition comes bickering. Damn does that stuff get old. It’s time to rise above the pettiness and do something. Recently Dr. Illusion took flak for calling on men improve themselves physically and mentally. Like the “Nice Guys of OkCupid” debacle, it’s another spat of in-fighting that’s neither productive nor healthy. Hating women and each other will not move us forward as men or as people.

One good thing happened though: The angry posts inspired this one. Here comes some tunes that have been inspiring over the years. Let’s listen to the masters and remember to keep moving forward.

Here’s Black Flag kicking off their Damaged LP with a call to arms:

We’re gonna rise above…

We are born with a chance

I am gonna have my chance

“Rise Above” has been a personal anthem for over a decade because of its call to get out of the crowd. It’s about taking charge and not letting anyone or anything bog you down. The same goes for the ‘sphere and the criticism over self-improvement and Game.

Judas Priest and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”

If you think I’ll sit around as the world goes by
You’re thinkin’ like a fool ’cause it’s a case of do or die.
Out there is a fortune waitin’ to be had
If you think I’ll let it go you’re mad
You’ve got another thing comin’.

Bob Dylan and “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)

He not busy being born is busy dying

Don’t fear when you hear a foreign sound to your ear

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him

Sly and the Family Stone and “Stand”

There are things to go through if you’re going anywhere

Stand for the things you know are right
It’s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand, all the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no do deal

“It’s Alright, Ma” and “Stand” were two of the songs behind the choice to come to Korea. I saw the opportunity and jumped on it. It wasn’t going to be easy–and it hasn’t been–but flying out the US has paid dividends. It’s forced me to grow up. Living in a foreign country forced me to confront problems head-on either alone or with help. It’s futile and wasteful to sit and complain. Whenever life gets tough, I think of them and feel a renewed sense of drive to keep going.

There. Four songs, four artists, four genres — One message: Go forth and kick ass.

But hell, I can’t post this yet. Look up at the banner and notice the quote from “Grinder.” Find that song and blast it. Then crank these two tunes:

Motörhead and “Live to Win”

You know you can’t be hurt,
You gotta believe in your star,
They’ll always treat you like dirt,
They can only push you so far,
They can’t take it away,
If they’ve got something to say,
They might try and fence you in,
But you’ve only gotta Live To Win

Flamin’ Groovies and “Teenage Head”

I’m a monster, got a revved up teenage head

I’m a monster, California born and bred

When you see me, better turn your tail and run

‘Cause I’m angry and I’ll mess you up for fun

And behold the snarl and the swagger.

Post your anthems in the comments section. I look forward to hearing what inspires you.
