Korea 101: I don’t see as much of this in the country, but it’s everywhere in Seoul or other big cities. Groups of girls will hold impromptu self-photo shoots anywhere and any time. It’s happened on subways. It’s even happened while walking down the street. A group of 3 halted and all held out their phones to document their walking down the street.
I once witnessed a group of 5 girls take selcas* at Yeouinaru in Seoul. All of them took between 3 and 300 photos–of themselves, not the group. They then spent 5 minutes comparing all of the photos they took. Why didn’t they simply take a group shot? Doing so would defeat the purpose of the selca, which is to show off that yes indeed, the smart phone takes pictures. It’s also done so girls can spend even more time looking at themselves.
*Selca = Konglish for “Self-camera,” or self-portrait. 셀카 is “selca” in Korean.
